Traveling is such a part of our modern culture but just because you’re heading out of town doesn’t mean your dating life should be put on hold - no. pack that up with your bathing suit and dress for dinner and be open to scheduling some dates while you’re on holiday. And that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about today - how to navigate those travel dates. First up let’s talk about dating apps.

Dating Hotline Question #1 - If I’m living (temporarily) in a different place do I still online date back in my home location?

This is a good question and honestly since we are a generation that is always on the move - weekend getaways, extended trips, quitting our jobs to travel the world, I encourage you to move your dating profiles when you travel. Drop your location to where you are staying, set up some dates, and meet some new people. If you are single - that doesn’t mean you’re only single in the town you live in. When you relocate yourself whether it’s a vacation or a COVID quarantine in a different place - take your dating profile (and dating life) with you.

This is important for a couple of reasons

  • Dating is different in different cities - this exposes you to different dating styles which helps you pinpoint your ideal partnership dynamics.

  • You avoid difficult conversations later when the other person wants to meet up in person.

  • You are present in your location instead of living for the future. Sometimes we get caught up in our future plans and forget to be present and grateful for today. Dating while away reminds us that we can find love anywhere in the most unsuspecting places and that life is happening every minute whether we are conscious of it or not. Enjoy each moment.

Dating in different cities is like trying a new ice cream flavor while dating different people in the same city is like ordering one flavor with different toppings every time. There’s nothing wrong with dating within the same city your whole life but since we know relationships ideals are formed through our previous relationship experience - in other words, what we are attracted to is conditioned from our exposure to our relational intimacy history - there’s a lot of different people and different flavors to try and experience and who knows your dating attractions may change with exposure to new/different dating experiences. Dating in different cities exposes you to different relationship dynamics that may not be present in your hometown. The change of pace could be really fun, or you could be very against it - either way you’ll learn something about your own dating habits and you’ll get a good story out of it.

A few opportunities to take advantage of destination dates. If you travel for work often and have the time in your schedule - these can be especially fun because this way you won’t be eating alone. Or if you are planning an extended vacation - travel dates can be the BEST way to explore a new place, you get your own personal tour guide with a side of romance.

The short answer to this question is YES drop your dating profile into the location you will be traveling to and date within the area. It doesn’t have to be serious - but you can spice up your dating life and you can possibly meet some cool people that can show you around a new city.

Dating Hotline Question #2 - If I’m dating in a location that’s not my permanent home - how do I address this with my date?

This depends on how long you're living in this other location. If it’s a weekend getaway then you want to share this information right at the beginning. But if you’re staying for an extended period of time then don’t rush to share this information, wait for it to organically unfold in the conversation.

If you’re only in town for a short period of time-sharing this information upfront will be very valuable. First, you’re putting yourself in demand - and you’re only available for a limited time. If you’re vibing with someone they will want to seize the opportunity to meet you in person. Plus you are honest and upfront with your intentions of this romance - short & spicy. Some people will like this because they are not looking for something serious.

But let’s say you’re staying somewhere for 2 weeks or longer - that’s plenty of time to see someone and if things go well, you could see this person a couple of times even. If this is the case, treat your dates like you would any other date - share this when the conversation goes towards that direction. In other words - when you talk about where you live (because somehow that comes up on every first date) express it then. Say something like “I’m staying here for the next 2 weeks, I’m originally from Chicago and I’ll be heading back at some point - the exact date hasn’t really been finalized but you’re really handsome so i wanted to meet you” This clearly explains that you’ll be in town for a while and that you’re open to dating and meeting people but at some point, you’ll be returning home. This honestly allows the other person the choice of continuing to date you with your plans or spend their time looking for someone who’s seeking a long-term partnership.  It’s all about dating intentions and when you express that you’re looking for something short and fun, just like if you were to say I’m looking for a long-term partnership some people will want that and some people are not interested in that.

The point here is to be honest sooner rather than later so you're not surprising the other person later on. If you do end up surprising someone with this information it could backfire as they may feel like they’ve wasted their time getting to know someone who isn’t even going to stick around. Dating intentions change the dynamics of all relationships - nothing is right or wrong, whether you're looking for something serious or you're just looking to have fun the most important part is communicating your intentions.

If you need help composing that message - sign up for my texting membership so we can finesse the message when you're crossing that bridge. It’s not about misleading or creating confusion, but rather it’s about creating a sense of urgency for this relationship that will create more excitement. And by creating the limited time together you can build chemistry between you two. Whenever something has an end date you want to appreciate it more. It’s Vacation Theory at it’s finest - go back and listen to episode 11 and refresh yourself on why that is a fool-proof theory. It makes sense and it applies to so many situations, this one included.

Lastly, I want you to approach these dates like Vacation Theory. Enjoy but don't expect them to continue when you leave. That’s part of the beauty of these travel dates - they are the epitome of leaving on a high note. You had a fun date with this person but there won't be a second date so that fun date is immortalized as a wild night while away on holiday. Just like I suggested in Episode 11, get each other's information, follow each other on Instagram, and throw those earned likes only when you mean it. But remember this will be the extent of the relationship once you leave, don’t expect to keep in touch because at this point - you two are glorified pen pals. If you’re looking for a real partnership, focus on finding someone to date in your area. It’s a heck of a lot easier than trying to start a long-distance relationship.

Curves & Kisses

We are swerving around these curves and blowing kisses as we go

Curve -

Don’t ever put your dating life on hold - it should always be a part of your life. If you’re taking a break from dating that’s one thing but don't get caught up thinking “I’ll date when _______” that kind of wait for the perfect moment rules are self-sabotaging whether we know it or not. Don’t wait for the perfect moment, every moment is the perfect moment. Keep this thinking alive when it comes to your dating life - you could be in the middle of a move or changing jobs, or your whole life feels like you’re upside down and the perfect person could walk right in - because love finds us when we’re least expecting it - keep your heart open to meeting someone. If you don't meet your perfect partner, you’ll have shared a pleasant exchange with a stranger and as millennials, we could always use the human interaction experience - especially after we’re all suffering from severe under socialization thanks to COVID. So get out there and start practicing your human interactions by sparking conversations with people standing behind you in line, or ask a stranger for their opinion of two items you're choosing between...just strike a conversation with anyone and watch your dating skills improve because your socialization skills have improved.

Kiss

And our kiss this week goes to Happy 4th of July. Go out and make your own fireworks this weekend - steamy holiday makeouts and cheers to getting lucky. Have fun you guys - Happy Birthday, America. Everyone drink one for me, have fun, and be safe! It’s also a fact that people are more inclined to mingle when there’s a celebration and since we can extend America’s birthday to last all weekend long - get out there and SHOOT YOUR SHOT. Don’t hold back - go after what you want and put yourself out there. Wild things happen when you put yourself out there those make the best memories.
